The big umbrellas also seemed unstable even with a weighted base and a table added, upon examining them in store displays. This little umbrella seems to be just fine for shading one person on a warm, sunny day. If you want more shade, just get another one. They're inexpensive enough that buying two is still cheaper than buying a 9 foot umbrella with a base.
